Clubs Matter: October 2018 Newsletter
The skating season is in full swing as we are halfway through regionals and quickly approaching the winter months. In this issue, we want to get your board on board with liability waivers, update you on National Skating Month, inform you of email scams and provide an update on SafeSport and volunteer compliance.
Getting Your Board on Board - Importance of Waivers
Waiver documents are a voluntary relinquishment or abandonment of a legal advantage, claim or right. As with any sport or physical activity, injuries may occur and waivers help protect clubs from the risk of financial loss from a lawsuit.

Best Practices:
  • The waiver should contain wording that the individual will not litigate against the organization.
  • The general liability carrier for U.S. Figure Skating requires that all participants have signed waivers and releases on file. Parents or guardians should sign for minors, and a new waiver is required on an annual basis. The waivers should be maintained for a minimum of four years and need to be available should a claim come forward.
  • A waiver and release is an acknowledgment that an activity carries certain risk that may result in serious injury, death or dismemberment.
  • Single-event waivers are required for one-time participants but are not required if an annual waiver and release is already on file.
  • Should you have questions about the waiver policy, please contact Wells Fargo Insurance Services at 800.796.2845.

Engagement - Scam Alert
Clubs beware! We have been made aware that club officers have received emails appearing to be fundraising campaigns. With websites like GoFundMe on the rise, it is now easier than ever to collect donations online, but be cautious when donating to a cause online or sharing it among your club members.

If one of your members does start a fundraising campaign, make sure it is clear where/who the money is going to, how the funds will be used and that it is a secured donation website. If you are unsure whether or not it is a scam, it is always best to contact the member or club directly.
SafeSport Program - Compliance for Volunteers
Here is the official definition of who needs to be compliant with your club:

“U.S. Figure Skating requires individuals it, or its member clubs, formally authorizes, approves or appoints (1) to a position of authority over, or (2) to have frequent contact with athletes to have successfully completed the SafeSport training and a background check with a green light finding prior to participating in and/or preparing for U.S. Figure Skating-related activities.”

For volunteers that serve throughout the year, they should become members of the club using the subsequent membership for only $24. These roles may include parent chaperones, locker room monitors and team managers. Others that are volunteering only once per year and don’t require club membership (i.e. ice show locker room monitor for a three-hour shift) should register for a “non-member account” on the Members Only log-in screen (under Find a Club) and complete the requirements. Every person’s compliance will be tracked in the database.
